The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
